what we have here is a dreamer

"we knew the girls were really women in disguise, that they understood love, and even death, and that our job was merely to create the noise that seemed to fascinate them." ~ the narrator

"i can't breathe in here." ~ lux lisbon

adolescence is such a time of mystery, and there are so many levels and layers within a person that we never share with anyone, and that we never get to know in others. we are all full of secrets, and we all love the mystery of others. this film, and book, capture that yearning to know, and the ways we connect, and fail at connection.

this is another one of those rare exceptions where a film captures the magic of it's literary source beautifully. sofia's rendition of the virgin suicides is like a good cover song, both capturing the magic and wonder of the original, but then as an artist painting it in her own shades and perspectives. the film is beautiful, raw, intimate, and mysterious; just as the boys see the lisbon girls, i think. it does not answer every question, and leaves you wondering and writing your own reasons. and, the music is amazing.

365 loves: the virgin suicides

  1. I didn't see the movie, of course, but I read the book. I loved it, as harrowing a read as it is.
