it's just me, and i'm playing this rock and roll thing

"you look into her eyes and it's more than your heart will allow
in august and everything after, you get a little less than you expected, somehow..."

and when autumn comes i feel warmer somehow, more alive, and i feel things so deep that my eyes are perpetually tearing. but i cry at everything, every emotion that hits me. some tears are not sad, some tears are the realization that you are falling, like the leaves, just hoping that you'll be caught, and held

and in august and everything after, sometimes when i think hard, close my damp eyes, i believe in wishes, and in you.

we got california drowning out the window side

"got no place to go,
but there's a girl waiting for me down in mexico.
she's got a bottle of tequila,
a bottle of gin,
and if i bring a little music i can fit right in."

there are wishes, and there are dreams, and there are songs that make things seem possible even when deep down you know they are probably never going to come to be. there are beaches and laughter, discarded straw hats and bare feet, and music; always music. it is a celebration, someone has just gotten married, and we have wandered off down the beach where there are less crowds, less camera flashes, less family that we do not even remember inviting. a circle of friends, so to speak, but we are more of a family then any we've been born into. the sun goes down and the music keeps playing.

i have had the same dream, with slight variations, for so many years that it has become as a bedtime story to my subconscious.

i'm one of the million pieces fallen on the ground

come around ~ counting crows

"have you seen the little pieces of the people we have been?
little pieces blowing gently on the wind.
they have flown down california,
they have landed in l.a.
little pieces slowly settling on the waves.

i'm one of a million pieces fallen on the ground,
it's one of the reasons when we say goodbye,
we'll still come around,
we will come around.

i have waited for tomorrow from december 'til today,
and i have started loving sorrow along the way.
i am calling from some city,
and i won't be there too long.
i could wait,
and i could waste away,
but what comes back is i hear you say we're gone.

for all the times that i go spinning up and down,
when all of the things have died between us,
well, we'll still come around,
we will come around.

after i've been missing for a while,
and you hear that summer's song.
haven't all the fading lines lingered on?

what i know is: she's going.
when you know it, it's alright.
so you put yourself between you and your pride.

if you wait for what's coming,
and you listen to her lies,
then she'll say the things you need to hear,
and the only one who'll disappear,
is you.

and one of the million lies she said,
is "all of the things you love are dead".
but i've seen what she thinks is love,
and it leaves me laughing.

so, we'll still come around."

it looks like darkness to me

"can i say,
i wish that this weather would never leave?
it just gets hard to believe,
that god sent this angel to watch over me.

cause my angel,
(s)he don't receive my calls,
says i'm to dumb to fuck,
to dumb to fight,
to dumb to save.

well, maybe i don't need no angel at all."

fall asleep next to me

black and blue (live, video) ~ counting crows

"fading everything to black and blue,
you look a lot like you,
shatter in the blink of an eye,
you keep sailing right on through.

every time you say you're learning,
you just look a lot like me,
pale under the blistering sky,
white and red,
black and blue.

you've been waiting a long time,
you've been waiting a long time,
to fall down,
on your knees;
cut your hands,
cut yourself until you bleed,
and fall asleep next to me.

wait for everyone to go away,
and in a dimly lit,
room where you've got nothing to hide,
say your goodbyes.

tell yourself we'll read,
a note that says,
i'm sorry everyone,
i'm tired of feeling nothing,
goodbye.

wash your face,
and dry your eyes.

cause you've been waiting a long time,
you've been waiting a long, long time.
to fall down,
on your knees,
cut your hands,
cut yourself until you bleed,
but fall asleep next to me.

have a dream i'm falling down,
on my face,
scrape my knees,
scrape my hands until they bleed,
cause you're fast asleep next to me,
next to me,
next to me,
next to me."

i don't know how to see the same things different now

"diving through the dark,
while the night turns blue.
are you aware of your intentions?
because i wear my intentions so clear.

if you see me wading through water,
come drown in the river right in front of the world.
you can wash your face and hands in the stream of my anger.
it's as bright as white paper
and as dark as a girl.

i don't want to feel so different,
but i don't want to be insignificant,
and i don't know how to see the same things different now."

this dizzy life

"i got a pair of wings for my birthday, baby,
and i will fall down through the sun to see you mine.
this dizzy life of mine,
keeps hanging me up all the time;
this dizzy life is just a hanging tree."

i think today i'd rather be spun around in circles, hands thrown wildly in the air, then spend all this time indoors crunching numbers. i feel like being five today.

all weather and noise

"i waited for an hour last friday night,
she never came around,
she took almost everything from me.

i'm going through my closets,
trying on her clothes, almost everyday.

i could have been anyone you see,
i wish it was anyone but me,
nothing but pills and ashes under my skin.

american girls are weather and noise,
playing the changes for all of the boys,
holding a candle right up to my hand,
making me feel so incredible.

if i make you cry,
you tell me why
i'll try again,
if you'll let me try."

ever since the new songs were singing in my ears i've been on quite the counting crows kick. this song, everytime i hear it i love it more. i think, first time around, it was one of my less favorites from hard candy - but now, now i cannot seem to get enough of it. it is impossible not to sing-a-long with, in that roll down the windows and blast the radio, and scream-sing kind of way. sometimes there is nothing quite like it - nothing quite like that kind of release. better than sex, i tell you. well, mostly.

if you wanted to be free

the new album is out next tuesday, and though i have listened to a leaked version, i will not post songs here. i plan on buying it as soon as it is available, as i have a great deal of love and respect for this band, and i encourage you all to do the same. it is an incredible album, well worth the wait.

it is a bit of a concept/theme album, entitled saturday nights and sunday mornings, meant to set the mood for both moods. the first half of the album is the equivalent of getting out into the city, the sparkle and shine, and the hard edges, that we take out into the night; hard, rough, raw, with lyrics such as the following, from the opening song, 1492:

"past railway cars and tranny-whores,
and mornings spreading out across the feathered thighs of angels,
oh where did we disappear to?"

the second half of the album is the morning-after sunday. hungover, with those inescapable regrets and the harsh light of the mirror. i know from adam duritz' blog that he has been doing a lot of soul searching and personal recovery lately, and it shows - if nothing else, then in the brutally honest lyrics on songs like the one featured in the attached video (and the band's first single), you can't count on me:

"coming along real good,
but i still can't do most of the things i should;
i watch the sky coming down to bury me,
and i can't stop this crawling out of my skin.

i know that you see yourself flying in,
out of the sky,
coming down to carry me,
but i won't come out.

so, if you think you need to go,
if you wanted to be free,
there's one thing you need to know,
and that's that you can't count on me.
no, you can't count on me."

get your dreams just right

keep art alive; art by gozde arig

"fix your hair just right
put your jeans on tight,
wear a dress,
so i can get it off real easy.
'cause i've been thinking,
i'd like to see your eyes open up real wide,

the minute that you see me.

if you don't come through,
i wouldn't wait for you.
i understand that everyone goes disappearing,
into the greatest grey,
that covers over everyday,
and hovers in the distance,
and the distance,
and the distance...

i've been up all night,
i might sleep all day.
get your dreams just right,
let them slip away,
i might sleep all day."

i have never been much of a girl in the ways you are supposed to be. i do not really know how to do my hair, it does itself most days, and thankfully it is a pretty tame thing so i do let it have its way. i do not pluck my eyebrows, much to my teenage daughter's chagrin. i've never had a facial, i do not do my nails. i know more about doing goth and stage make-up then i will ever know how to make myself up to look natural. i do not have a skin care regime, or even know how to begin to put one together. and in all honesty, i am more comfortable in a pair of pants then any skirt or dress i have ever donned.

that said, there are days i wish i had those skills. that i'd learned to be more of a girl. that i had an arsenol of beauty techniques to battle the bad days, and the signs of age with. and sometimes, like today, when i have actually worn a dress, with pointy girly heels and dark tights. when i've done my hair (or really, had said teenage daughter do my hair), when my make-up took more than fifteen rushed seconds, and when i actually am wearing matching items under my clothes...well yeah, i get it, i feel different. i feel beautiful actually. and it does have a positive effect on me.

it reminds me of this quote from one of my most favorite shows that have ever graced the small television screen, my so-called life:

"sometimes it seems like we're all living in some kind of prison, and the crime is how much we hate ourselves. it's good to get really dressed up once in a while. and admit the truth: that when you really look closely? people are so strange and so complicated that they're actually... beautiful. possibly even me."

and i can't see why you want to talk to me

heather, at i am fuel, you are friends, posted about my most anticipated album so far this year. saturday nights & sunday mornings is set to release on march 25 (thanks adam, almost a happy birthday gift to me). adam duritz has this to say about the album:

"[it's] about dissolution and disintegration. it's about when saturday night happens and you lose all sense of yourself. and it’s about when you wake up sunday morning and look back at the wreck you’ve made of your life and you think, 'how can i possibly fix this? how can i ever climb out of this hole?' and then you start to try and climb."

cheers to the effort of climbing out of our holes, and finding the other side of disintegration. it may not be what you expect to find, but there are always sunday mornings, and another chance to find your bliss; at least that is my hope to believe in.

"and you know that i don't like you,
but you want to be my friend.
there are bodies on the ceiling,
and they are fluttering their wings.
it's okay that i'm angry,
but you never understand."

and i have started loving sorrow along the way

"the longer your life goes on, the harder the decisions become. inevitably at some point you're asked to give up something you love for something you love. so, sure, you hope you make the right choice, but there's nothing wrong with giving up something you love for something you love. i mean if you're not willing to sacrifice for the things you love, what kind of a person are you?"
adam duritz, counting crows

and something that has made my month of august (and everything after), from the upcoming album saturday nights and sunday mornings, slated for a november release:

i'll be your engine driver in a bunny suit

keep art alive; art by scott altmann

waiting in the target dressing-rooms, circles around the cars max thinks are best; i fancy the lightning mcqueen with his tongue sticking out, though veronica scrunches her nose up and calls it rude. suppose i like to be a bit rude, now and again. i always find it amusing that people who do not know me well find me so serious and serene, either overly-kind or somewhat distant. i've been called mysterious, a poet, an artist, a lover, a mother, and occasionally a bitch. and, yes they are all part of who i am, some days i'm more one than the other. but rarely, if ever, do people pick up the sarcasm, the sense of humor that is rather warped, nor the snarky side. of all the things i know i require trust to let out, i never thought being silly or inappropriate was something i only allowed certain people to see.

if you asked my closest friends they would tell you i can be quite a slag at times, that i laugh as easily as i cry, and that most days i am just a dork. that car, the mcqueen with the tongue stuck out, that is who i am sometimes; irreverent and a bit of a brat. and if i love you, if you matter to me, i will tease you - at times showing very little mercy.

part of it comes from the family i grew up in. we can be a bit of a rough crowd for the fragile, or ill-prepared. we are all very competitive, and have a strong command of words, and know quite well how to use them to wrestle and conquer one another. we are a family of mockers and miscreants, but under all of the snide comments and taunting jabs, we love each other.

my brother told me once that he would sit down any new girlfriend, before he brought them round to meet the family, and go through a de-briefing; basically recanting any and every embarassing story, or topic that will be seen as fair game, so that we are rendered powerless on meeting the new her. i laughed at him and said "you forget that i'm ten years older than you. i have stories you don't even know existed that you were part of." but, then again, he has quite a few on me, too.

while i stood in that dressing room, picking out the tongue-wagging mcqueen and waiting for julia to ask for the next five tops to try-on, my cell phone rang. i put it to my ear and hear pete yorn singing the line convince yourself that everything is alright, 'cos it already is.
for a moment i am transported to chicago - grant park, to be precise, and i am among friends who are screaming and singing along. last night i was saying how much i wish i was there, how after the week i've had i could use the company of friends and music, and she said to me "lucy, what do you want?" and then a list of artists and bands were laid out before me. it was pete that i chose because right now i need a dose of the familiar, a song i can sing along to, and the hands held (and lighters raised) way that music can travel through the distances and bring me right where i long to be.

i was supposed to be among friends today, actually. the beach and kids running in the sand, music and arms to wrap around me that understand what this week has been for me. but, the week has taken it's toll on me, or i suppose, i have allowed it to beat me up. i feel a bit like a scene from fight club, walking about with bruises from my own internal tyler durden. the marks and sore spots are inside, though; a sore throat and headache, my stomach feeling like i've been held upside down and shaken, or that i've just exited montezuma's revenge loopy roller coaster. so, instead of the sand and the much needed water's edge (the ocean, she soothes me), i am back and forth from the couch, slipping into dreams and shivering under a blanket even though it is sweltering outside.

the last dream i had was of climbing a tall tree, and i was up there balancing on it's twisted limbs. my hands were shaking and i felt like the little girl i once was who took that dare from the neighborhood boys, and climbed all the way to the top of the tree-house tree. i remember that feeling, i think they call it vertigo, where everything looks jangly and out-of-focus. i thought i might die, that i would never feel the ground beneath my feet, that i would tumble and fall down some proverbial rabbit's hole and never be seen again.
in this dream, i felt the rush of that, the lack of control and that unmistakable fear trembling and vibrating just under my skin. and then i opened up my mouth to scream, but instead of sound all these feathers flew out. and then the music started, from somewhere below, and with the music came this overwhelming feeling of safety. and with that, i woke up.

my subconscious loves to take the wheel when i allow it, especially when i feel ill and let myself collapse. my dreams are always in color, and they always have a running soundtrack. even in sleep i am singing. the feather girl that i was this afternoon climbed up the tree and was singing along with adam duritz, this line is the one that i woke up with, just waiting there on my slightly parted lips.

she's my angel
she's a little better than the one that used to be with me
cause she liked to scream at me
man, it's a miracle that she's not living up in a tree
i may take a holiday in spain
leave my wings behind me
drive this little girl insane
and fly away to someone new
